Careers & Work Experience

Careers

As you begin to think about finishing school, it is important to consider your next steps. There are many post-16 options available, including employment, apprenticeships, vocational courses and academic courses.

The choices you make will depend on the type of learner you are, the grades you achieve, and your future career plans. Below is an overview of the main pathways available.

College Open Evenings

Shrewsbury College – Final Open Evenings

  • 3 February 2026 | 5.00–7.00pm
(English Bridge & Welsh Bridge campuses)

  • 12 February 2026 | 5.00–7.00pm
(London Road Campus & Higher Education)

Telford College – Final Open Evening

  • 29 April 2026 | 5.00–7.30pm

Level 1 Vocational Courses

  • Typically require 4 GCSEs at grades 1–2

  • Colleges will not accept students studying only English and Maths

  • Alternatively, students may need to complete a year with The King’s Trust or a training provider first

Level 2 Vocational / Study Programmes

  • Require at least 4 GCSEs at grades 2–3

  • Includes Level 2 BTEC courses such as:

    • Engineering

    • Health & Social Care

    • Supporting Teaching & Learning

    • Sport

    • Working in Education

These programmes do not include apprenticeships, which are usually completed alongside college study.

Level 3 Pathways

(A Levels / BTEC / T Levels / Apprenticeships)

Entry requirements typically include:

  • Level 3 courses: 4–5 GCSEs at grade 4 or above

  • A Levels: Some subjects require grade 5 or higher; sixth forms often have higher entry requirements

  • BTECs: Usually 4 GCSEs at grade 4 or above; a good alternative where A Level entry is not met

  • Apprenticeships: At least 4 GCSEs at grade 4 or above, including Maths and English

A Levels and Sixth Forms

  • Sixth forms generally require 5 GCSEs at grade 5 or above

  • Maths, English and Science often require grades 6–7

  • Telford College: Grade 5 in Maths and English required.

  • Shrewsbury College: Grade 4 accepted, although some courses require grade 5.

Apprenticeships

Apprenticeships allow students to earn while they train, gain valuable work experience, and develop both practical and academic skills.

Key points to consider:

  • Most require 4 GCSEs at grade 4 or above, including Maths and English.

  • Places can be competitive and limited to certain job sectors.

  • Students must apply independently and attend interviews.

  • Motivation, commitment and a clear area of interest are essential.

  • A CV and application are required.

  • Always have a back-up option, such as a college course or pre-apprenticeship programme.

CV (Curriculum Vitae)

A CV (Curriculum Vitae) is a short document that outlines your education, skills, achievements and experience.

It is important because it helps you present yourself clearly and professionally when applying for college courses, apprenticeships, work experience or employment, giving employers and providers a quick overview of what you can offer.

Work Experience

The Telford Langley School Work Experience

Work Experience is up and running with a large proportion of students successfully gaining and enjoying placements last academic year (24-25). Please read the information below carefully and start to consider where you would like to visit for your work experience placement in Year 10. The placement may be in a field that you are interested in or it may be a placement that will benefit you in gaining ‘soft skills’, for example: communication, customer service, confidence or numeracy.

Work Experience Date 2025-2026:

  • Work Experience Week: 6th - 10th July

Welcome to your Work Experience 2025-2026 programme. Telford Langley is working with Telford and Wrekin Education Business Links (EBL) to help you acquire the skills and knowledge that will prepare you for the workplace and to inspire you to plan for and achieve a successful future.

We use a website called GroFar to help search for, and confirm, work experience placements.

What GroFar does do?

  • GroFar will allow you to search a database of companies that have previously offered work experience
  • GroFar provides you with the contact details of these companies so that you can contact them yourself
  • Allows you to add a new company if you have found a placement that is not on the GroFar database

What does GroFar not do?

  • GroFar does not contact companies for you. You have to email, phone, or contact a company in person yourself to organise your work experience.

Suggested templates to use when contacting companies can be found below. This part of the school website also has a ‘GroFar Student Guide’ which shows you how to use the website and search for placements. You will also receive a year group assembly on this and your RSHE teachers are here to help guide you through the process in the coming months.

How do I use the GroFar website? - https://auth.grofar.com/ :

  • Step 1. Create an account. An email has been sent to student’s school email addresses asking you to set up a password. We recommend that you use your school password so that you don’t forget the password you make for GroFar.
  • Step 2. Access the ‘GroFar Student Guide’ to help you use the website.

Please remember: this is just the start of the process. You will have an assembly and your RSHE teachers will be here to help you and guide you through the process in the coming weeks and months.

What should I do now?

  1. Finish setting up your GroFar account by making a password
  2. Start using GroFar to search for companies that have offered placements before
  3. Start contacting companies to try and find a work experience placement week beginning 06th July 2026.
